Join me on the Farm or at Market in 2025

Shooting Star Farm is a small, certified organic vegetable farm located 12 miles east of Mineral Point. I grow a wide variety of vegetables for farmers' markets, individuals, and restaurants.

Two types of positions are available in 2025:

  1. Part-Time Seasonal or Summer Crew Members

  • Seasonal work starts April/May and ends in October; early & late season hrs limited.

  • Do you attend college? Then a summer position might work for you. Starting times begin in May and end in August, depending on school schedule.

2. Farmers’ Market Assistant (can be combined with farm crew member position)

  • Saturdays approximately 7:00am-11:30am May through October.

Farm Crew Positions:

I generally ask that you be available four days per week, for a total of 20-25 hours.

More hours are possible June-September. Early and late in the season times and dates can vary.

* Working 1-3 days/week will be considered as long as you can commit to a regular schedule.

*In general, work hours are 8:00am-2:00pm, with a short, paid break.

This hourly position can be a great learning opportunity for someone newish to vegetable farming. It can also be a great opportunity for someone more experienced.

My farm production consists of approximately 1 ¼  acres of intensively planted vegetables, 2 acres of cover crops and 2 unheated hoophouses. A tractor is used for tilling the soil, mowing, and hauling heavy stuff, but most work, including greenhouse seeding, field planting, weeding, harvesting, washing, and packing is done by hand. You will be involved in all aspects of this work including spreading amendments, laying landscape fabric, moving irrigation, trellising, maintaining deer fencing, cleaning tools, doing minor repairs, etc. A large percentage of the work will be done alongside me, but there is an expectation that once you are trained on a task that you can work independently or as with others.

Considerations for farm work:

  • We work outdoors in hot, cold, and rainy weather, so you must dress accordingly and be prepared for changes in weather. We do not work during extreme weather or lightning storms.

  • This is a physically demanding job. It requires repetitive bending, crouching, stooping, and standing.

  • Ability to lift 40-50lbs on occasion may be necessary.

  • Punctuality and the ability to do detailed work are required.

  • I love to chat while we work, but we need to keep a steady work pace while doing so.

  • Questions are encouraged and appreciated. Communicating and cooperating is essential and necessary to get things right. Your feedback about how to improve systems is welcomed.

  • Experience is preferred but not necessary. I will train you, but at a minimum a strong interest in working outdoors, an interest in plants, horticulture, soils, and/or cooking and gardening is desired.

Benefits include generous access to extra vegetables.

Full-season workers will be given a clothing stipend to help pay for farm shoes or raingear after one month of work.

Work schedules can be flexible around vacations with advanced notice.

Farmers’ Market Assistant

This job includes setting up and taking down tables, tents, and produce displays; assisting customers with product selection and bagging; adding purchases and making change.

  • Must be available at least 3 Saturdays per month from 7:00am-11:30am May through October. This job can certainly be paired with seasonal or summer farm work.

  • Enthusiasm, a quick pace, and excellent customer service skills are required! Simple mental math will be necessary to quickly add purchases.

  • Some knowledge of cooking and vegetables in general is extremely helpful.

  • Although not especially physically demanding, you will be expected to unload/load crates and boxes of vegetables weighing up to 35lbs, handle set-up of folding tables and tents, and work in all types of weather.

We have a lot of fun a Market each week engaging with customers and each other.

Benefits include generous access to extra vegetables.

Work schedules can be flexible around vacations with advanced notice.

Compensation: Pay for positions is in line with local seasonal work and dependent on experience.
